Reach4Life

Starting the Revolution

The REACH4LIFE Project was initiated in 2003 by the International Bible Society to help curb the spread of HIV/AIDS to the next generation.

Scripture Union (SU) South Africa was invited to be part of this revolution in the early stages of its development as it complements our own HIV/AIDS Intervention Strategy, already run successfully in hundreds of South African schools.

REACH4LIFE is a process using the Bible as a tool in HIV/AIDS preventative work.

The Process

  • A school is approached with the offer of free books. Once permission for a roll-out is obtained, a date is set

  • Local churches in the community are invited to take part in the distribution and are trained to be REACH4LIFE group leaders

  • The roll-out is done in the school. Learners are encouraged, but not forced, to take a book and are given the option of joining a REACH4LIFE group. This is to facilitate a commitment to Jesus and also to abstinence, whichever comes first. The groups make use of the added material (12 or 40 week bible study) in the book

  • From that temporary spiritual community of the REACH4LIFE group, learners are encouraged to become part of a permanent one, i.e. the local church, in which there group leader should be involved

Therefore, the entire process of REACH4LIFE could take anywhere from three months to a year to distribute in any given community. Check out www.reach4life.co.za to get a feeling for what’s happening.
