SU Strategies

Camping

Camping is a core and long-standing programme of SU. Camps are run in all Regions and can be adapted for a range of outcomes, from Outdoor Leadership Programmes to Underprivileged Camps.

Schools Work

Jesus Our Teacher (JOT) is a co-ordinating body, under the SU umbrella, for local-church based school workers. There are JOT workers placed in schools in most provinces.

SU is active in hundreds of Primary and High School Christian Groups, actively promoting innovative programming, Bible-reading and discipleship.

SU’s Lifeskills Education Programme is the current tool for SU’s HIV/AIDS Intervention Strategy for young people. It consists of a range of programmes run either in-school or out-of-school.

Community Work (Holiday Clubs, Youth Centres)

Holiday Clubs are a proven SU strategy for engaging children and teenagers during holiday periods, providing a safe holiday experience where life learning occurs. These are typically run at community centres or at churches.

SU also is piloting a Youth Centre in Alexandra– SU Ikemeleng Youth Centre, where computer training is provided with an ongoing Lifeskills programme.

Volunteering and Training

SU offers 6-month and one-year full-time volunteer programmes (Trendsetter and SUMMIT) and is geared to partner with churches / organisations in training in youth ministry. Typically SU trains and provides opportunities for approximately 8,000 volunteers each year.

In 2004, SU impacted the lives of 140,000 young people!

“The Lifeskills course helped me feel better about myself and I stopped being influenced by my friends.”

Bible Engagement

A key aspect SU focuses on is ensuring that our direct youth strategies are supported by the right resources – for camping, for use in schools by teachers / volunteers / staff members, and on community programmes.

SU also produces a range of home-grown Bible-reading tools for pre-school to adult readers. These include Closer to God, Khula, Khula Kids and Come Along.

A third aspect of SU’s resources are SU Bookshops, linked to Regional offices ( Cape Town , Durban and Joh ann esburg ), and Resource Centres ( East London and Port Elizabeth ). SU Bookshops offer true church resources.

SU is a key partner in the Reach 4 Life Project in which specially produced HIV/AIDS books (NIV New Testaments) are placed in entire schools, with follow up Reach 4 Life groups and church integration.
